current events

.....the ARC campus was open early this morning. I didn't show up until noon. Lots of classwork to do,
but I needed to run some errands. The usual, uneventful, everyday "boring" things that need attention ....
gas station ( third price increase in 5 days ), drop off dry cleaning, get a new garden sprinkler and grass seed,
then to the post office for stamps. Some people still use stamps to mail letters made from paper to keep in touch. Yes, I know it is the 21st century, new decade new technology etc.

I could be using use email, texting, twitter or some other critter to be interactive with the bulk of society. But there is something lost in the immediateness of instant communication. There was a time that we had to wait weeks, days or hours to get information. Now it is at the speed of light and some think that is still too slow.

The optimal solution would be to get a message before the other person sent it. Now that would be the social media event that would truly save all of us some time.

from a wandering mind....

Before the sun rose, my incomplete sleep cycle was intruded upon by the shrill, piercing cry of a neighbors car alarm announcing its perception that something was not as it should be. It continued for a few seconds, stopped, chirped and began again.

Probably the wind, I half thought, setting the alarm upon its predetermined course to alert all within range that it needed to be tended to. I waited. In my waking state, my unformed thoughts alternated between ignoring the sound, getting up and looking out the window into darkness at whatever might be happening, and ignoring the sound. I also considered ignoring the sound. I began to build a tolerance to the alarm and soon drifted back into 3/4 sleep.

My phone rang. I looked to the clock, reached out my hand  and turned the switch on the lamp ( I do not use the clapper ). The voice on the phone asked for a cab. I do not have one. I informed the caller of my status as a non cab owner. I was told that I'd should have several of them. I repeated that I have not a single cab in my garage, driveway or in front of my house. I also asked the caller if they were sure that they had dialed the correct phone number. The caller said something about my lineage and hung up. I do not believe that the caller seeking a cab has met any of my family members, as they are truly fine people. I quickly came to the conclusion that the caller had, in fact, dialed my number by mistake. He and I may disagree on this point, but I am sure that there are no cabs registered to me at the DMV.  And so begins another day.
